How Many Breweries in San Diego? July 2019 Edition
July was a busy month. Three tasting rooms opened, and one brewery opened. One brewery closed. There are now 156 craft and 5 non-craft breweries in San Diego county, plus 51 craft and 1 non-craft tasting rooms, for a grand total of 213 locations.
Given the 36 projects in planning that I am aware of, after early August I expect a bit of a lull in openings over the next month or so, at least compared to the pace San Diego has been setting during the spring and summer. It seems likely there will be a flurry of activity at the end of 2019, too. Given some bits of information I have picked up, I have revised my prediction for the number of openings before the end of the year. In the last four months of 2019, my best guess is that an additional fourteen locations will open. I have a feeling two currently open locations will close in that period, but we’ll see on that. If all that comes to pass, that would bring the total number of brewery and tasting room locations in San Diego County to a whopping 236.
Here is THE LIST of breweries and tasting rooms, in a conveniently sortable spreadsheet.
My Yard Live officially opened on July 1.
Kilowatt Brewing Oceanside Taproom and Provisions, a tasting room and restaurant near the pier in Oceanside, soft-opened July 5. They will be celebrating their Grand Opening on the weekend of August 3.
Thorn Brewing’s new tasting room in Mission Hills debuted on July 19.
Harland Brewing’s tasting room in Carmel Valley’s One Paseo complex opened on July 24. This is the first of two tasting rooms planned for Harland this year.
Gordon Biersch closed July 15. The location will reopen as Puesto Mexican Artisan Kitchen and Bar, including brewing under the Puesto Cerveceria brand with the long-time GB brewer still manning the works (date unknown, but presumably soon).
Pure Project Brewing will be hosting the Grand Opening of their new “Pure at the Park” tasting room in Banker’s Hill on August 2-4.
In a Facebook post on July 22, Little Miss Brewing announced that their Escondido tasting room would be opening “summer 2019.” That must mean very soon. They also have a La Mesa tasting room in the works.
Hoponymous Brewing plans to take over the Council location in Kearny Mesa, where they will produce private label beers for SD bars and restaurants. They will not have a tasting room.
WestBrew to open in Vista in early 2020.
Creative Creature will not, after all, purchase the Council/Finest Made/Butchers/Manzanita location in Santee. Apparently the landlord is not interested in making it easy for another brewery. I’m surprised any brewery wants the location, given that every one that has had that space is now out of business.
As of early July, Barrel Harbor is seeking help to the tune of $50k to save their business through a GoFundMe. Not a good sign.
